    MARCH 2007 NEWSLETTER

Welcome to the March 2007 issue of the South Dakota Counseling Association web-based newsletter. This month's issue is loaded with articles of interest and importance to members, including a question and answer section from the two upcoming President-Elect candidates. Read the brief statements below and click on the link (bold and underlined) to the article to read it in its entirety.

    Conference Time is Near

Your leaders have been working hard to make this a great conference for you. One in which you can learn new things, have fun, see old and make some new friends. Convention time is also a time to gather together as a profession to collectively and collaboratively move our profession forward. As a profession we have had to work hard to gain the recognition that we deserve but we are not there yet. There is still a lot of work left to do.

    Cornbelt Chapter Corner

The Cornbelt Chapter has had so many great opportunities to connect and learn in their chapter this year. Look here to see all the wonderful happenings in the Cornbelt Chapter.

Duncan Elected to Represent Midwest Region on ACA Governing Council

SDCA member, Kelly Duncan, has been elected to represent the Midwest Region of the American Counseling Association on the ACA Governing Council. Duncan will begin her term July 1, 2007 and serve until June 30, 2010.

    Mental Health Insurance Parity Legislation

Mental health insurance parity legislation has been introduced in the House of Representatives. Reps. Patrick Kennedy (D-RI) and Jim Ramstad (R-MN) introduced the “Paul Wellstone Mental Health and Addiction Equity Act” (H.R. 1367) to stop health insurance plans from charging higher co-payment rates for mental health and substance abuse services, and from placing arbitrary coverage limits on such care. The legislation was introduced with 254 Representatives already signed on as cosponsors.

New Law Offers Recognition and Healing to Bereaved Parents

Pierre, S.D. - Much publicity has been focused on reducing South Dakota’s infant mortality rate with the recent I Never Knew campaign launched by the Department of Health. However, minimal attention has been directed toward epidemiological factors and the emotional aftermath facing families after enduring the tragic death of a baby to stillbirth. Palace/Pheasant Chapter

    Practice Law Signed Into Effect

HB 1056, the practice law bill, was signed into law by Governor M. Michael Rounds. The law will go into effect July 1, 2007.

    Sioux Chapter to Host Workshop

Traditionally Sioux Chapter has hosted a Fall Workshop on Ethics. This year will bring some changes, with our workshop held June 8th and 9th. While our focus is still on ethics, we're excited to offer a variety of presenters and topics that will address diverse ethical challenges within our communities.

Supervision and Ethics Topic of Preconference Workshop

The role of a supervisor is instrumental in the professional development of new professionals. Behind every hour of service provided by an intern or a new professional is the guiding skill of a supervisor. This year SDCA is indeed emphasizing the role of supervision in a special pre-conference workshop entitled What Supervisors Need to Know Regarding Ethics.
