Ethics Column
By Jay Trenhaile, Ed.D.
Resources for ethical issues improved significantly in 2006 as the ACA Ethics Standards Casebook, Sixth Edition by Barbara Herlihy and Gerald Corey was published as was Boundary Issues in Counseling: Multiple Roles and Responsibilities, Second Edition also by Barbara Herlihy and Gerald Corey. Both of these resources have been revised reflecting the 2005 ACA Code of Ethics and are authored by two of the most recognized names in the Counseling Ethics, Barbara Herlihy and Gerald Corey.
The Sixth Edition of the Standards Casebook uses case studies and vignettes to provide the latest information on the 2005 Code of Ethics while also addressing some of the newer areas in the field such as online counseling. The Second Edition of the Boundary Issues in Counseling book helps practitioners sort through some of the sticky issues of multiple relationships while providing the most current perspectives on this challenging area.
In addition to utilizing these resources, counselors will want to add Thursday, November 30th to their calendar. That is the date that Dr. Herlihy will be on the campus of South Dakota State University to provide a day long training session. Her presentation "Ethical and Legal Issues in Counseling Children and Adolescents in School and Community Settings" is one to be sure to not miss.
