Graduate Students

Dear fellow Graduate Students,

As a recent grad I would like to take the opportunity to inform you about the numerous benefits of being involved with the South Dakota Counseling Association. Becoming part of SDCA was one of the best things I did for myself and my career. It has provided me with new friends, a professional network, and lasting memories.

The annual SDCA conference is a great place for graduate students to meet contacts for possible internship opportunities. At my very first conference as a graduate student I had the pleasure of meeting a wonderful counselor who eventually offered me an internship position. I felt very lucky to receive such a great opportunity. At my second SDCA conference I met another amazing counselor who helped me secure my very first counseling job. In addition, she offered to supervise me for my LPC. Thanks to the great networking opportunities available at the conference I now have a job that I love and have SDCA to thank for giving me the opportunity to meet such resourceful mentors.

The SDCA conference has many opportunities available for students to get involved. I would encourage you to consider becoming a moderator or present a poster. Both guarantee a valuable experience where you are sure to meet a wide range of people. In addition to the valuable learning experiences, the conference offers countless moments of fun and laughter.

Although the conference tends to be the highlight of the year, there are also local chapters and areas of specialization to be involved in. Specialty areas include: Counselor Education and Supervision, Mental Health Counseling, School Counseling, and Indian Counselors.

The local chapters are the best way to meet counseling professionals in your area. Throughout the year local chapters will host various social, service, and professional events. This is a great way to learn about services available in your area while also having some fun. Local chapters also provide the opportunity for leadership experiences. Within months from graduating I was approached to serve as Treasurer for my local chapter. Serving as Treasurer has allowed me to have input in planning local activities, and meet seasoned professionals who have taught me valuable lessons. But foremost I have made some great friends and shared some fun times.

Thank you for your time, and I sincerely hope you become a member if you are not already a part of SDCA.
