During this time of COVID-19, SDCA would like to take time to put a spotlight on those students who are graduating this May. These students have put in long hours, both clinical and classroom, to earn their Masters degrees in Counseling. SDCA has invited all of our student members to submit a photo and a little information so that you can get to know them better as well!

Jenny Larson, Master of Science in Education-Clinical Mental Health; Northern State University

Tell our SDCA members a little bit about yourself and your best graduate school memory. Hello! My name is Jenny Larson and I am graduating from Northern State University with my Masters in Clinical Mental Health. My best graduate school memory was the time my classmates and I spent after class. Sometimes it was to continue a debate about whatever we talked about in class that day. Other times it was to connect about our home lives, stress, and how we are talking self-care.

Now that you have graduated, what is next? Now that I am graduating, the next steps include working as a Clinician  at The Support Circle located in Mobridge. Once I have become situated in my new job, I am going to work towards obtained my a degree with Chemical Dependency.

Akela Sorensen, Master of Arts; University of South Dakota, Clinical Mental Health Counseling

Tell our SDCA members a little bit about yourself and your best graduate school memory. I am graduating from University of South Dakota with a clinical mental health counseling master of arts degree, my best memory is sitting in diagnosis class with Dr.Olson and he didn't know the answer to one of our questions and replied "GTS". We all looked at him very confused and he says 'google that shit" as if we as the younger generation should've known!

Now that you have graduated, what is next?I am moving on to be a Clinical Therapist at LSS Summit Oaks Center.

In the picture I am wearing money leis which is a Hawaiian tradition for graduation.

Tell our SDCA members a little bit about yourself and your best graduate school memory. Hi SDCA! I am graduating this year!   My name is Andrea Garlick and I am graduating from Northern State University with an emphasis in Clinical Mental Health. My best graduate school memory is all the times standing in the parking lot after classes (usually in the freezing cold since we live in South Dakota) in fellowship with my Grad School Trio, Kat, Eric & I, just supporting one another and aiding in each other's journey!

Now that you have graduated, what is next? My husband and I are moving back to Wyoming and I have accepted a position as a Clinician at Campbell County Behavioral Health. While the journey will look a little different with telehealth being the primary delivery for a while I am beyond grateful for my new opportunities!
