Description: The pressures and disappointments inherent in striving for the unattainable goal of perfection can result in considerable anxiety for children, older students, and parents alike. This seminar will cover the sources of perfectionism as well as the ways it can contribute to anxiety and maladaptive behavior patterns. Participants will learn various intervention approaches, including Play Therapy, Filial Therapy, storytelling techniques and cognitive-behavioral methods which have been applied to children, adolescents, college students and parents with perfectionism-related difficulties.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the advantages and disadvantages of perfectionism and how it is passed through generations in order to understand the child in play therapy treatment
  • Explain how the therapeutic powers of play allow for the reduction of anxiety through the play therapy treatment
  • Demonstrate play therapy techniques to lower anxiety and allow for mistakes in family and school
  • Describe the needs of perfectionistic children, older students and families and how to use play therapy to meet them.
  • Identify play therapy techniques to help all clients express themselves through play.
  • Explain how to counter the perfectionistic play with metaphors.
